THE HISTORY OF THE CITY

EUROPA

532 km far from Paris, in Alsace, situated at the entrance of La Thour river at the feet of Vosgi, THANN is a tourist, agricultural and commercial centre with 7800 inhabitants.
The little city was founded around 1275 by the counts of Ferrette by the name of villa Tanne or Tanna castrum, following the legend around a Chapel built by Engelhard de Ferrette the count, in the honour of Saint Ubaldo, the bishop of Gubbio.
The Chapel becomes the destination goal of numerous pilgrims coming from the North Europe and, thus, the source of a flourishing city. In 1324, the citizens begin to build a magnificent Collegiale in gothic style in the honour of Saint Ubaldo (Saint Thiebaut). So comes that every year on the 30th of June the saint is celebrated in a ceremony culminating with the ascension of three fir-trees (SAPINS).
The Collegiale preserves a crystal rock containing a relic of Saint Ubaldo.

Whether Saint Ubaldo of Thann was or not the same saint bishop and protector of Gubbio was an issue discussed for centuries. In fact, many scholars wished the saint of Thann were an hermit called THIBAULT de Province, while the Eugubians denied strongly that the body of the uncorrupted saint they have been very fond to preserve in the Church (Basilica) on the Ingino Mountain was missing a finger.
Only today, thanks to the patient researches of don Ubaldo Braccini, bishop chancellor at Gubbio, and also to the modern technologies, we can finally say that there is no doubt that the Saint of Thann is the same with the one venerated at Gubbio.
This is proved quite by examining the relic preserved at Thann. And the reverent Braccini explains in detail in his book, LA MANO DI S. UBALDO (Saint Ubaldo’s Hand), is exactly the little piece of skin missing from the little finger of the right hand of the Saint’s Uncorrupted Body that is preserved at Gubbio.

In this manner, while Gubbio celebrates Saint Ubaldo with the Wax Feast on May 15, Thann celebrates the saint with the cremation of the three fir-trees (CREMATION DES TROIS SAPINS) on June 30th.
